What's The Schelling Point for Identity?

Saw this bit linked at This Week In Reaction (2017/06/25) and it sparked some thinking about identity.

American Homer: Kurt Sutter & Catholic Identity in Mid-Century America
As mentioned above, the highest enrollment in Catholic parochial schools happened when the Irish Catholics and the Italian Catholics of Boston and New York began inter-marrying after WWII (as well as, of course, the Poles, Irish, Italians, Lithuanians, Hungarians, Germans, etc. in the Great Lakes basin). Unsure of which ethnic heritage to emphasize, their children started becoming American Catholics -the Universal Church applied to a new “ethnicity”.

But the 1960s disrupted this process of “ethnogenesis”. The results of enticed suburbanization, the Civil Rights Movement, the Sexual Revolution, and the Vietnam War meant that instead of American Catholics, they became “whites”, which has no meaning except, “not-black”, and now means “not a person of color.”
The trouble with white identity is that it isn't really an identity. In a 90% white nation, this adds no information within the white community.

Instead of playing ethnic Marco Polo (what am I? where do I belong?), I suspect the majority will converge on a Schelling Point
In game theory, a focal point (also called Schelling point) is a solution that people will tend to use in the absence of communication, because it seems natural, special, or relevant to them. The concept was introduced by the Nobel Memorial Prize-winning American economist Thomas Schelling in his book The Strategy of Conflict (1960).[1] In this book (at p. 57), Schelling describes "focal point[s] for each person’s expectation of what the other expects him to expect to be expected to do". This type of focal point later was named after Schelling. He further explains that such points are highly useful in negotiations, because we cannot completely trust our negotiating partners' words.
The popular example is a group of people agree to meet in NYC on June 30 at 12 PM. But they don't say where to meet. Where do they go? The Schelling point is where the majority of them show up, it's where you think other people are likely to think to go.

An identity can be forged. Americans in the 19th Century chose an American identity. Soccer was rejected in favor of baseball, rugby was replaced by football. A decidedly anti-European attitude developed, building on the concept of the New World. The cowboy, the gunslinger, the pioneer. No monarchy. Compared to Europe, a very horizontal and flexible social structure. There was a even a racial/ethnic component. The American is a superior European specimen, forged by battles with Indians and Nature.

The American identity has been turned from a blood and soil identity into an idea, but many people still think of it in racial/ethnic terms.

Which people say "I'm not a hyphenated-American, I'm an American." White people. Multiculturalism and rising diversity, plus the "flight from white" creates space for Americans to reclaim American identity. It is even spreading back to traditional American sports: baseball so white. The Alt-Right can further reclaim this with the #FakeAmericans hashtag. Foreigners already associate American with white. In many countries, if you say an American is coming, in their mind they see a white person. No doubt many on the Alt-Right already do this when they read a story about "home grown terrorism" and immediately think: this guy is not an American.

American is also a political identity. Loyalists were violently removed from the United States. Most fled to Canada, many returned to England. Even at the founding then, there was not even a unifying English identity. You were for the new American nation or you were against it. The appeal to a white identity fails because it isn't exclusive enough.

We can debate whether European descended Americans will gravitate to an American identity. I believe there's enough cultural overlap across several ethnic groups that some type of pan-ethnic identity will form, such as in the South. But from the standpoint of needing an identity, it is much easier to find the Schelling point and then conquer it, then to try to convince several hundred million people to accept a newly made up identity.

The American identity is there for the taking. Nearly all minorities identify as something else, be it Muslim, Asian, African. Many left-wing whites implicitly dislike the American identity, preferring to identify by things such as the 36 genders of LBGTDQ. The "flight from white" and anti-white propaganda will oppose whatever is white. Cuckservatives will push back on the American identity being reclaimed by European Americans, but they will stand alone. Non-whites will react like this: Students Denounced As Racist For Wearing US Flag Colors
Supporters of the Des Moines North High School basketball team, many of whose players are from refugee families, were offended when fans of Valley High School’s basketball team wore red, white and blue last week, The College Fix reports.

“This is an example of BLATANT racism,” said Ty Leggett, a Valley High School alum, on the Valley High School – WDMCS Facebook page. “ALL participating should have been pulled and banned from ALL VHS extracurricular events for the remainder of the year! As a parent, I’d be mortified that my son or daughter thought this way, acted in this fashion and refrained from taking a stand against this 21st century inexcusable behavior!”

Erin Ness Carter, a mother living in the Iowan district, remarked that “for the supporters of one team from a primarily white part of town to paint themselves as the ‘team of the USA’ it strongly implies that the other team, the less white team, is less American.”
There's the typical cuckservative reaction:
“This country is the United States of America and our country colors are red, white, and blue no matter what color of skin you have or what race you are,” said Mallorie Paige Sander, a current Valley High student. “The intentions to offend anyone by wearing USA themed clothing was no where in the thoughts of any of our student body, why would it be? We all live in America.”
But this cuckservative excuse didn't fly:
The assistant coach of Valley’s opponent, Des Moines North, had different thoughts.

“Any normal person, any educated person can look at that and think what the hell are these kids thinking,” said Morgan Wheat, assistant coach of the Des Moines North basketball team, according to WHO-TV.com. “Kids are kids, I get it, but I do have questions. I want to know why.”
From reading the reports, the students aren't Alt-Right. The left and non-whites reacted exactly as the Alt-Right would like them to react though. The seed is already planted in the mind of non-whites that American does equal white, or at least they think it means white in the minds of white Americans.

  1. Identity seems to have various Schelling points and these are often related to environment, heredity, proximity to others, heritable distance from proximate others, and culture which is a brief way of describing all the previous in concert along with the social adaptations developed in response.

Broadly speaking, I've noticed that historically, westerners had two valence identities under most circumstances. In low orbit there was the more obvious tribal identity which was at-first very local and later on approximately regional or national. Variance still exists. For example, first order identity of most Colonial American populations is regional, owed to the fact that some regions were heavily Anglo, some heavily Scots-Irish, others German, etc. The first order identity for most Jews in Israel is their ethnic substrate: Ashkenazim, Sephardim, Mizrahim, which is related to their prior regional diaspora.

The second order identity is one that has become the subject of great controversy. This identity is something that was largely cultivated in place where vast empires were built. Being part of the Roman empire was an identity of sorts, so was being part of Christendom. The collapse of these empires caused a re-alignment to more local secondary identities which ultimately emerged as kingdoms and later nation-states where the national identity (linguistic affiliation of generally close genetic groups) became prominent.

These two identity points seemed rather stable for a very long time. People who held both valence identities prospered from the relative comity of the outer valence and the inner cohesion of largely homogeneous inner valence. But today with modern transportation and the emergence of genocidal liberalism, neither one operates effectively.

The first-order identity still has rather obvious utility. We now have genetic science backing up the claims of lineage and local kinship spanning millennia. But the problem arises, particularly in America, that many population groups no longer have such a timeline of particularity. Some regions are still vastly more Germanic or Anglo-Celtic than anything else, but substantial parts of the population have non-trivial admixture from elsewhere.

That, of course, doesn't mean the obviation of first-order identity, but it does demand that people be taken more seriously when they claim a more recent (centuries old, rather than millennia) regional identity such as Southerners or New Englanders in the United States who are effectively diasporated and recently divergent populations of Anglo-Celts who've formed unique cultures.

Second order identity is much harder as that is the source of endless political propaganda from the liberals. Christendom is long dead, the modern-day Empires of the west reject even first-order identity, much less second order, and so the only politically correct second order identities are meaningless on-paper affiliations to a state ID number with zero genetic, cultural, sometimes not even linguistic, preconception.

The alt-right attempted to revive this on the condition of whiteness. This can and very well might work to suit, but in the current environment it will be greeted with nothing but hostility. White had a very distinct Euro and Euro-colonial meaning at one time, with a variety of cultural association, but today there are legions of marxist books and professors attempting to deconstruct that and supplant it with ambiguity.

The bad news is, American is lost to liberalism and has been for a long time so without unthinkable political action today, demographics will ensure it's erasure as a suitable second order identity. Whites is a better suit as it encompasses at-least a familial gene pool from a discrete region of the world.

  2. White looks like a default because the enemies of many different things (capitalism, patriarchy, America, oil drilling) coalesce around the anti-white banner. It's the new "anti-communist" coalition.
