China Wants to Talk

Earlier this week I wrote:
The Chinese sometimes create a crisis to force negotiations on an issue. They don't seek a rise in tensions, but to bring parties to the table. Westerners view aggravating tensions as an aggressive maneuver and often respond in kind.
Trump Questions the One China Policy

US Defense official: Chinese warship stole US underwater drone
A US oceanographic vessel Thursday had its underwater drone stolen by a Chinese warship literally right in front of the eyes of the American crew, a US defense official told CNN Friday.

In the latest encounter in international waters in the South China Sea region, the USNS Bowditch was sailing about 100 miles off the port at Subic Bay when the incident occurred, according to the official.
The Hainan Island incident of 2001 was quickly forgotten because 9/11 happened five months later. China wants to discuss the South China Sea. Trump can either take their "offer" or escalate tensions. At this moment, the U.S. has more freedom of action because Trump can credibly threaten economic Armageddon for China.

The Trump honeymoon is over.
